Do translation earbuds work without internet?
Partly: English also works offline, further languages can be downloaded as offline packs. The rest need an internet connection.
The smartphone needs the connection
The earbuds connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth. The translation happens in the SITranslate app on the smartphone. So when an internet connection is needed, it is the smartphone that needs it: via Wi-Fi or mobile data.
English and offline packs
English works straight away, even without internet. For further languages, you can download offline packs in the app. You need an internet connection once to do this.
Languages without a downloaded pack need an internet connection while translating, meaning Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Download packs over Wi-Fi before you travel
It is best to download the offline packs you need over Wi-Fi before you travel. That way you do not use mobile data for it on the go. This also helps where there is no network, for example in remote areas in the mountains.
Abroad, roaming charges for mobile data may apply depending on your mobile plan. So check before you travel what your plan includes in your destination country.
Check before the conversation
Before a conversation starts, a quick check is worthwhile: are the right languages selected in the app? Is an offline pack downloaded for them, or is the smartphone online? Then you can start the translation.
